Indiana 04:43
Indiana Indiana, many years have come and gone since we first met. You'd be just a faded memory but yet. I see you in the dark and silver light, riding through these empty fields tonight Destination, is a place not far beyond your border line and I don't have plans to stay with you this time just a tired traveler passing through thinking back on years I spent with you I came of age here in your midwest town with the nations troubles burning all around safe and sheltered from that fear and pain with the farms and the sky and the cornfields and the summer rain Indiana Expectation, of the kind of man I thought that I could be Those old hopes and plans are staring back at me some came true and some were left behind waiting here tonight for me to find So many roads took me far away so many changes in the wind along the way but this westbound train brings me back again to the time and the place and the dreams from way back then Indiana, many years have come and gone since we first met. © Rick Gedney & Michele Gedney 2002

Waiting 03:32
You’ve been watching the sky. You say it makes you feel at home. I’ve been watching your eyes. I say I’m glad I’m not alone. Everyday, we wait to begin Every day…. We are waiting…holding our breath for the passing clouds. We are waiting…stars in our eyes till the night comes down. You’ve been watching the stars. Hoping to see the night unfold. I’ve been thinking your so far Wondering why I feel so cold. Everyday, we wait to begin Everyday… We are waiting…holding our breath for the passing clouds. We are waiting…stars in our eyes till the night comes down And your eyes, they are filled with stars And your eyes, they are searching mine And so I’ll tell you one more time This is real enough for me. © 2006 Michele Gedney

here is a little space Between the days I could not find another time today Here in this quiet place I will replay The rushing moments I don’t mind it Sounds like rain Sounds like rain Sounds like rain I hear what you’re saying anyway You’re sleeping next to me Behind your eyes Your dreams are giving you away The only sound I hear Is falling rain And I’m not sleeping and I don’t mind it Sounds like rain Sounds like rain Sounds like rain I hear what you’re saying anyway Michele Gedney © 2015

Say A Prayer 04:34
It’s the same old story I can’t find the time No matter how hard I try Drag out the hoses Put out another fire Living a life Dreaming a dream Always the two apart Mending the fences Instead of the broken heart Say a prayer for your daughters Say a prayer for your sons Say a prayer for love to guide them on Say a prayer for the child in everyone Maybe tomorrow Maybe today Maybe another year The end of December Always takes me here I heard a voice Sing the refrain Nothing stays the same So I look for the sun Standing in the freezing rain Say a prayer for your daughters Say a prayer for your sons Say a prayer for love to guide them on Say a prayer for the child in everyone Guide me with spirit Guide me with love Guide me with words of truth I’ll hear your voice and follow my heart to you. © Rick Gedney 2002

f there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s how to find myself blind; I don’t need to see the walls, to know the way. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s how to trust myself a little, to listen to my own voice tell me, It will be o.k. So don’t tell me this is no time to cry it hasn’t stopped raining. And don’t tell me how I need to try just let me sing slowly. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s how to love the way that we love, to see the beauty through the pain, to start a new day. © 2006 Michele Gedney

There’s a nice old man Living outside of town You might not notice when he comes around Well, I don’t know much but his name is Tom. He says he moved out here after Vietnam He says “life is getting shorter a little each day… little by little it slips away.” There’s a lady I know She lives alone in this town I thought she’d like to meet Tom when he comes around. At first she said “no”, then “well, maybe I can” “but I’m not really into taking care of some man.” She says “life is getting shorter a little each day… Little by little it slips away.” It takes an open heart For a second chance. A lack of fear in the circumstance. You say, well who am I to tell them what to do? Well, I kept my heart open so I know that it’s true. Life is getting shorter; it’s a little cliché But little by little it slips away Life is getting shorter a little each day Little by little it slips away Little by little it slips away Yeah, little by little it slips away. Out of Time 04:52
ou throw your coat across the back of my chair You throw a glance around the room You sit beside me like you were already there and then you smile. You try to gather up the confidence You try to summon up the nerve You try to find a place where you can finally feel at home for just a while. And I've seen that look you get before you run away and I've seen how hard you've tried to ride it out and I don't know how far you've come only to run away I know that it will take a lot of love. You give yourself a little distance from the rest you give yourself so little faith and you give up long before you ever get to start the test you're out of time. And I've seen that look you get before you run away and I've seen how hard you've tried to ride it out and I don't know how far you've come only to run away I know that it will take a lot of love. What did you bring tonight? where do you keep the weight you carry? Your secret's out of sight until the light shines in your eyes. © Michele Gedney, 2002

Go 04:23
Go, count all the stars…tell them goodnight for me. Go, stand on a mountain and wish on the wind. Go, tell them you’re free. Tell them that I…wanted to pull you away then go. Go, watch how the moon tucks herself in for the night. Go, learn how to glow without any fire. Go, gather her light. Tell her that I…wanted to keep you away then go. No turning around No looking down or into my eyes when I let go. Go, hear how the ocean endlessly call out your name. Go, feel how the waves pull at your heart. Go, tell them to wait. Tell them that I…wanted to take you away then go. No turning around No looking down or into my eyes when I let go. © 2006 Michele Gedney

Falling 04:02
Here it comes again, I'm falling, falling I'm weightless in the wind, I'm swirling to the ground and I'm reaching out to catch my fall, don't feel anything at all and i'm crashing down, I'm off the wall again Falling to the end. You'd think that after all these years, I would recognize False responsibility in confident disguise carrying the burden of a weight that is not mine i'm looking down, I never see the signs. Here it comes again, I'm falling, falling I'm weightless in the wind, I'm swirling to the ground and I'm reaching out to catch my fall, don't feel anything at all and i'm crashing down, I'm off the wall again Falling to the end. Tell me something I can use, to break this fall to lose these blues I am listening to you, my friend Catch me if you can. Here it comes again, I'm falling, falling I'm weightless in the wind, I'm swirling to the ground and I'm reaching out to catch my fall, don't feel anything at all and i'm crashing down, I'm off the wall again Falling to the end. © Rick Gedney, 2002

You smile and you disappear into the crowd And I dare not go Magic and mystery lost in the sound And I dare not go And a page turns over And a page turns over I know this is yours now I know this is yours now I know this is yours now Call when you get home All you will ever need and all I do is keep letting go Every note you hear is inside you We are letting go And a page turns over And a page turns over I know this is yours now I know this is yours now I know this is yours now Call when you get home Michele Gedney © 2015

Everything Has Changed No, I never looked for things beyond my sight i never heard a small voice call to me no, I never searched for any guiding light only held the things within my reach No, I never prayed for revelation No, I never thought to wonder why no, I never needed anything at all maybe it was easier not to try But now everything has changed you may never understand that everything has changed for me No, I knew where any path would lead when I finally followed my heart No, I never planned what my next move would be only knew the time had come to start You see, everything has changed you may never understand that everything has changed for me © Michele Gedney 2002

See You Next Time Well, I got here right on time Just in time to pay my outstanding bill With just an hour to cover my formative years At this rate, I never will. I’m sure we talked about my father It’s somewhere in your notebook, 55 pages back. It’s not that I can’t deal with working through the past again. It’s just the money that I lack. But I will cry to you And you will charge by the hour I will cry to you ‘cause it’s my time. I won’t lie to you I sometimes think we’re getting nowhere I will cry and then I’ll see you next time. I caught a glimpse of your 4:00 as she was leaving I wonder who she goes home to. Does she drive around a while until her eyes are dry? Does she feel the way I do? I will cry to you And you will charge by the hour I will cry to you ‘cause it’s my time. I won’t lie to you I sometimes think we’re getting nowhere I will cry and then I’ll see you next time. Did you know that I saw you in the market yesterday You looked tired. You looked lonely. Like you had something to say; like “see you next time”. © 2006 Michele Gedney

I am watching through a window You’re moving so fast, your feet don’t touch the ground I think that somehow if I don’t look away I can keep you from falling down I know that fear won’t bring me closer I know that logic has its place I know that in the end, my heart will hear the truthAnd you know everyone is running at their own pace And standing still won’t keep you safe And I am learning to fall I am learning to fall I’m just learning to fall Let me know when I hit the ground You are standing closer to the edge Than I would ever dare to go There’s no anticipation showing on your face As you leap into the unknown And I am learning to fall I am learning to fall I’m just learning to fall Let me know when I hit the ground Michele Gedney © 2015

Let It Rain 05:09
You say you don't want to drag me down You say this is more than I can take But what you don't understand and what you don't see is my heart is far too full to break You say you don't want to be alone I say I will always stay But what you don't understand and what you don't hear is there's really nothing you can't say So if laying your troubles down will lessen the pain and if there is a coming storm let it rain. You say you can't find the time to dream You say you can't make those nightmares go away But what you don't understand and what you don't know is that I am awake too, night and day So if laying your troubles down will lessen the pain and if there is a coming storm let it rain. © Michele Gedney 2002

They’re tearing up Springfield Avenue It’s backed up for miles down to route 42 Neighbors and strangers trying to find their way home The Mayor sees, the Mayor knows, The Mayor says, “that’s just the way that it goes” For all these poor strangers trying to find their way home On the corner he watches the world passing by You can tell by his words and the look in his eyes From the corner he can’t tell the truth from a lie; anymore “Crazy fool” some people say To hang on that street corner day after day Smiling at strangers trying to find their way home All is one on Springfield Avenue From the corner of Hope down to route 42 Neighbors and strangers trying to find their way home Bankers and laborers Counselors and caterers Misfits, misanthrope, shaman and shavers Pilgrims and pagans trying to find their way home © 2006 Rick Gedney

Butterfly 03:31
You are safe here in our circle You’re ready to receive And by the time I hear you it’s time to leave I can tell you hear me singing You’re moving in the air And by the time I reach you, you’re not there We are singing from the middle of the storm and like the wind it carries you up to reach the sky We are singing to be heard above the thunder and the rain Now unfold your wings and you will fly Butterfly You are speaking without saying Beginning to ascend And by the time you’re flying it’s time to land You are safe here in our circle But I might never know When you’re following the sound where do you go? We are singing from the middle of the storm and like the wind it carries you up to reach the sky We are singing to be heard above the thunder and the rain Now unfold your wings and you will fly Butterfly Michele Gedney © 2015

Downstream 05:11
There is a strong tide pulling tonight I feel the current circle my feet There is a wave riding just off shore And the moon moves it closer to me And I have been anchored by what I can't see But what makes me so sure it's too deep? Water is shapeless when the wind dies down And I wish it would carry me downstream And the moment when I give in is the moment when I receive And the moment when I let go is when I will believe We are so much like water in so many ways And we move like river to the sea And when we surrender we get swept away like a boat carried so gently downstream And the moment when I give in is the moment when I receive And the moment when I let go is when I will believe © 2002 Michele Gedney

Grateful 04:11
I’m staring at the letters on the page I don’t remember how they got there Maybe you were with me Maybe they’re not really mine I’m practicing the chords you taught me I doubt I’ll ever get them right Maybe all this trying may be all I need to fly I don’t sleep anymore and I’m tired but I am grateful just the same I can’t find any time and I’m tired but I am grateful And I need you to know I will be forever grateful to you there’s a fine line I’m looking up into the night sky And, yes, I’m feeling pretty small But in the absence of light I do believe I’ll see it all I don’t sleep anymore and I’m tired but I am grateful just the same I can’t find any time and I’m tired but I am grateful And I need you to know I will be forever grateful to you there’s a fine line © Michele Gedney, 2015

No more defying the truth your denying No more deceiving the heart No wrong conclusion No false illusion Will save you from falling apart Open your eyes Out of your darkest dreams Don’t be afraid to trust what you hold in your heart Open your eyes Come see what love will bring If you have faith to follow No pain or sorrow… Fear of tomorrow No looking back to forget No sound of sighing No years of crying Will take away all you regret Open your eyes Out of your darkest dreams Don’t be afraid to trust what you know in your heart Open your eyes Come hear what love will sing Gather your faith and listen Listen……… Listen……. © 2002 Rick Gedney

Is there love enough? Is there love enough to feel? Is there hope enough? Is there hope enough to heal? Is there room here in your mind where you put your fear to disappear? I’m praying we’ll stand our ground I’m praying we’re safe and sound Right now Is there faith enough? Is there faith enough to dream? Is there peace enough? Is there peace enough to believe? When it feels like holding on is just holding onto only air I’m praying we’ll stand our ground I’m praying we’re safe and sound Right now Michele Gedney © 2015

about

Rick and Michele Gedney, known as the duo, Open Book, have been writing, recording, and performing together since 2000.

ReCollection, released in 2021, celebrates 20 years since the release of Open Book's first album. This is a compilation of 20 of the most-streamed songs from their three albums. Included in ReCollection are two songs which have been re-mixed. Indiana, from Open Book’s first release, Out of Time, was originally recorded without Michele’s guitar. Everything Has Changed, from the same album, was originally recorded without Rick’s guitar or vocal. Twenty years later, those parts have been added for this release!

“Many thanks to all the musicians who brought their amazing talents to these projects and to the venues, the radio D.J.s, and the listeners who have been so supportive over the years. A special thanks to Billy Masters for outstanding production on Out of Time and The Things We Keep.”
