Butterfly 03:31
You are safe here in our circle You’re ready to receive And by the time I hear you it’s time to leave I can tell you hear me singing You’re moving in the air And by the time I reach you, you’re not there We are singing from the middle of the storm and like the wind it carries you up to reach the sky We are singing to be heard above the thunder and the rain Now unfold your wings and you will fly Butterfly You are speaking without saying Beginning to ascend And by the time you’re flying it’s time to land You are safe here in our circle But I might never know When you’re following the sound where do you go? We are singing from the middle of the storm and like the wind it carries you up to reach the sky We are singing to be heard above the thunder and the rain Now unfold your wings and you will fly Butterfly Michele Gedney © 2015

Grateful 04:11
I’m staring at the letters on the page I don’t remember how they got there Maybe you were with me Maybe they’re not really mine I’m practicing the chords you taught me I doubt I’ll ever get them right Maybe all this trying may be all I need to fly I don’t sleep anymore and I’m tired but I am grateful just the same I can’t find any time and I’m tired but I am grateful And I need you to know I will be forever grateful to you there’s a fine line I’m looking up into the night sky And, yes, I’m feeling pretty small But in the absence of light I do believe I’ll see it all I don’t sleep anymore and I’m tired but I am grateful just the same I can’t find any time and I’m tired but I am grateful And I need you to know I will be forever grateful to you there’s a fine line

You smile and you disappear into the crowd And I dare not go Magic and mystery lost in the sound And I dare not go And a page turns over And a page turns over I know this is yours now I know this is yours now I know this is yours now Call when you get home All you will ever need and all I do is keep letting go Every note you hear is inside you We are letting go And a page turns over And a page turns over I know this is yours now I know this is yours now I know this is yours now Call when you get home Michele Gedney © 2015

How many years - have you been waiting How many dreams - have you been saving You never know; maybe these clouds will pass You never know; maybe your love will last this time How many years have you never tried How many hopes have you pushed aside You never know; maybe your heart won’t break You never know; maybe you will be saved When will you believe When will you begin Any step you take will lead you in Open your heart now You never know; maybe your luck will change You never know; maybe you’ll be amazed When will you believe When will you begin Any step you take will lead you in Open your heart now Michele Gedney © 2015

There’s a nice old man Living outside of town You might not notice when he comes around Well, I don’t know much but his name is Tom. He says he moved out here after Vietnam He says “life is getting shorter a little each day… little by little it slips away.” There’s a lady I know She lives alone in this town I thought she’d like to meet Tom when he comes around. At first she said “no”, then “well, maybe I can” “but I’m not really into taking care of some man.” She says “life is getting shorter a little each day… Little by little it slips away.” It takes an open heart For a second chance. A lack of fear in the circumstance. You say, well who am I to tell them what to do? Well, I kept my heart open so I know that it’s true. Life is getting shorter; it’s a little cliché But little by little it slips away Life is getting shorter a little each day Little by little it slips away Little by little it slips away Yeah, little by little it slips away. Persuasion 05:43
© Richard Thompson/Tim Finn You and I, tempted by the promise of a different life Time has fled, there's a constant battle Running through my head I don't know what to do cause I still believe After all the foolish things you put me through I could always make a start on something new And I've always been the one who's open to Persuasion Blind romance, there'll be no half measures given half a chance But we never learn, trusting in the fire while the cruel flame burns And we need to repair what was never there What got left behind After all the foolish things that we've been through I could always make a start on something new And I'll always be the one who's open to Persuasion And it's written in my heart so that everybody can see it And it's written in my soul, after all I still believe it I still believe it, I still believe it I don't know what to do cause I still believe After all the foolish things you put me through I could always make a start on something new And I'll always be the one who's open to Persuasion

There is a little space Between the days I could not find another time today Here in this quiet place I will replay The rushing moments I don’t mind it Sounds like rain Sounds like rain Sounds like rain I hear what you’re saying anyway You’re sleeping next to me Behind your eyes Your dreams are giving you away The only sound I hear Is falling rain And I’m not sleeping and I don’t mind it Sounds like rain Sounds like rain Sounds like rain I hear what you’re saying anyway Michele Gedney © 2015

Swirling all around you now Hiding in the shadows and the shade Searching for a place to rest It’s only light, don’t be afraid Passing softly through you now Drifting on the sounds as they recede Listening for a silent moment It’s only air, now you can breathe You might be ready to slow it down Take in the space and the stillness now The words will come, they always do Don’t try so hard, the earth will move Stirring underneath you now We tread so lightly on the fragile ground The tiny seeds are pushing through It’s only time you’re waking to You might be ready to slow it down Take in the space and the stillness now The words will come, they always do Don’t try so hard, the earth will move Michele Gedney © 2015

© Lennon/McCartney We said our goodbyes, the night before. Love was in your eyes, the night before. Now today I find, you have changed your mind, Treat me like you did the night before. Were you telling lies, the night before? Was I so unwise, the night before? When I held you near, you were so sincere, Treat me like you did the night before. Last night is the night I will remember you by, When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry. We said our goodbyes, the night before. Love was in your eyes, the night before. Now today I find, you have changed your mind, Treat me like you did the night before

I am watching through a window You’re moving so fast, your feet don’t touch the ground I think that somehow if I don’t look away I can keep you from falling down I know that fear won’t bring me closer I know that logic has its place I know that in the end, my heart will hear the truthAnd you know everyone is running at their own pace And standing still won’t keep you safe And I am learning to fall I am learning to fall I’m just learning to fall Let me know when I hit the ground You are standing closer to the edge Than I would ever dare to go There’s no anticipation showing on your face As you leap into the unknown And I am learning to fall I am learning to fall I’m just learning to fall Let me know when I hit the ground Michele Gedney © 2015

Turning 03:47
Take down the wilted flowers now Hard as you’ve tried to keep them warm Soon they would only disappear Fly away in a windy winter storm Take down the wilted flowers now Why do you always look away When suddenly colors disappear In a cycle of gray and green and gray And you are turning too You mirror the season’s change You move from gold to blue And nobody will explain Why you can’t stay Take down the wilted flowers now Look through the window; see the snow Nothing can really disappear It’s only the way we come and go. And you are turning too You mirror the season’s change You move from gold to blue And nobody will explain Why you can’t stay Michele Gedney © 2015

Is there love enough? Is there love enough to feel? Is there hope enough? Is there hope enough to heal? Is there room here in your mind where you put your fear to disappear? I’m praying we’ll stand our ground I’m praying we’re safe and sound Right now Is there faith enough? Is there faith enough to dream? Is there peace enough? Is there peace enough to believe? When it feels like holding on is just holding onto only air I’m praying we’ll stand our ground I’m praying we’re safe and sound Right now Michele Gedney © 2015

about

"Grateful exemplifies the low-key power of haunting melody buttressed with expansive harmony, the satisfaction of adroit wordplay entwined with skillfully understated musicianship. Those Gedney harmonies get showcased to great effect on Open Book's take on Lennon and McCartney's "The Night Before"—rebooted here as a great ballad—and the Richard Thompson/Neil Finn folk-pop gem "Persuasion. Bittersweet rarely sounds so good, or needed". Robert Burke Warren, Chronogram Magazine
